“gravicells” Gravity and resistance -by Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media Co-production: YCAM Interlab

“In this artwork, it is possible for us to develop a new human sense through feeling gravity differently than usual and having new perception of body. The work provides a space with hypothetical dynamics having the opposing forces of gravity and resistance, through special devices and sensors.”

“In “gravicells” - Gravity and Resistance Project gravity is used as a perceptive interface, and has to effect that it makes us conscious in a synaesthetic way of the natural forces surrounding us. As players we become autonomous cells in a larger system susceptible to the dynamics of gravity and resistance. By playing with two opposing forces we become aware of the potential and constraints the latter hold.”

An interactive installation that makes a “phantasm” appear in a space. Participants hold a sphere. When light is released from the sphere, it is just as if a phantasm has been lit up before them: white butterflies appear in profusion. When the light is shut off the phantasm disappears as if it were a dream.

“Joystick everywhere” is a personal computer peripheral consisting of no handheld stick that pivots about one end. Rather it is a three-dimensional tactile sensor which can estimate the magnitude and direction of the force and contact position of the handheld object or user’s finger, consisting of an elastic body as thin and soft as human skin and light beams irradiated in parallel just under the elastic body. -
